3 Ways to Make Your Blog Better

4 01 2010

We made it! 2010!

I’ve never been much of one for New Year’s resolutions, however, I definitely do think that there can never be too many good excuses to improve your life for the better.

Granted, making your blog better might not actually get posted under the “Improving Yourself” category, it could very well help improve someone else. So let’s get started.

1.) Look at Your Stats

See what posts people have viewed the most. Ask yourself, “what did you write about that caused everyone to view them so many times?”

Was there a specific way you wrote the post? Were you in a certain mood and let “them” have it as honestly as possible? Were you reviewing a product or service? Were you posting photos that people seemed to connect with?

Basically, what I’m trying to say here is that you should attempt to make correlations between what you have done and what drew people to it. That way will be able to get even more people interested in what you’re writing about.

2.) Always Use Tags and Keywords

This might seem like a waste of time to you, but you’d be surprised how much more visible your blog will become if you use keywords and tags.

What are the important things in your post? Use it as a Tag/Keyword.

What are the underlying themes of the post? Use it as a Tag/Keyword.

3.) EDIT, EDIT, EDIT!!!

I can not stress this last one enough. It never ceases to amaze me at what I will catch when I read through my posts before I publish them. (Unfortunately, sometimes it’s afterward as well).

Write out your post first. Do it in what ever way works best for you.

(Do it all in one sitting. Break it up into multiple sessions. Write it while listening to music. Write it in silence so you don’t distract yourself.)

Once that’s done, then go back and read over what you have written.

Does everything make sense to you? Are there better ways to get your point across clearly? Does your post flow well, or do sentences and paragraphs need to be rearranged (or deleted)? Have you used the same “major” words multiple times in one paragraph?

Are there any typos? Are there any words misused? Is your punctuation correct?

You’d be surprised at how many readers you can gain just by improving your writing, not to mention your blog as a whole.

Now get to it. Work on those 2010 resolutions.

From someone looking to get a head start on blogging from behind in the game this was helpful!

I wholeheartedly agree with the importance of good grammar & composition. They are still readers, and you’re still the writer. Don’t do them a disservice!
